What happens to my pet if I go to hospital?
You land in hospital without warning, and your pet waits at home. This plan makes sure someone finds out.

When nobody knows your pet is alone
An accident, a collapse, an ambulance. You are in hospital, and your dog or cat waits at home. Paramedics and hospital staff look after you. They know about your pet only what they find on you.
You need three things: people with a key, notes on you, and something that raises the alarm when you don’t check in. The five steps take one evening together.
Choose helpers
Pick two to four people nearby. Neighbors, friends or family who know your pet and can get to your home fast. Ask them first. Whoever says yes goes on your list.
Set the order too. Who lives closest? Who can be reached during the day? The first on the list is the first to be alerted.
Arrange the key
Every helper needs access: a spare key or the knowledge of where one is. Without a key, even the best yes is no use.
Write down what your pet needs: food and amount, medication, vet, walks or outdoor access. Keep the note in your home or as a photo with your helpers. In PawSafe you also add an access note. A helper sees it only in an emergency, after tapping to reveal it.
Put an emergency card in your wallet
Your ID is in your wallet. Next to it fits a card that says your pet is home alone and lists up to four numbers in calling order. Whoever finds you then knows.
Create it in your browser with the free pet emergency card generator. PawSafe creates the same card in the app too.
Add a note to Medical ID on your iPhone
First responders can open Medical ID on a locked iPhone. If you add a note about your pet there, anyone who helps you can read it.
The guide with a ready text to copy is on Medical ID on iPhone for pet owners.
Use the PawSafe timer as a safety net
A card and Medical ID work only if someone finds you. The timer works even if nobody does. You start it with one tap when your pet stays home alone and choose a time between 30 minutes and 24 hours.
If you don’t check in, PawSafe opens an emergency and alerts your helpers one after another. When one says “I’ll help”, you know right away and the others can stand down. Helpers with PawSafe get the notification for free. SMS and WhatsApp for helpers without the app come with an optional subscription. There is no account and no login.
Who notices when?
Without preparation, nobody notices on their own that your pet is alone. The course below is an example, not a measurement. In your case it may go faster or slower.
- Hour 1You are in the ambulance or the emergency room. The staff look after you. Your pet waits for the door to open. Nobody but you knows about it.
- Hour 8Your pet is hungry and needs to go out. A dog may bark. The neighbors hear it but rarely link it to you. A cat tends to hide, and nothing stands out.
- Hour 24Your phone rings and you do not pick up. Friends and family wonder. Many think first of a flat battery or bad reception. Only when someone rings your doorbell does anything move.
- Day 2Someone stands at your door without a key. They do not know whether you are away or something happened. Reaching the landlord or the police takes more hours.
With preparation it goes differently. Your timer ends after the time you chose. Then PawSafe alerts your helpers one after another, and one says “I’ll help”. How fast that happens depends on the timer length you set.
What is not enough
Some things feel like protection and fail when it counts.
The number in your phone
Your helper is saved in your phone. But your phone is locked, broken or with the clinic. Nobody sees there whom to call. A number helps only if someone knows it exists. That is what the emergency card and Medical ID are for.
The camera
A camera shows you your pet, but it calls nobody. You have to look and act yourself. If you are in hospital, nobody watches the feed.
The automatic feeder
A feeder dispenses food. It does not walk the dog or give medication. It also tells nobody that something is wrong. You still need a person with a key.
If you have nobody
Not everyone has four people nearby. Start with one and build from there.
- Neighbors: Talk to the people in your building. A chat in the stairwell is often enough. Also ask your local neighborhood help group whether someone looks after pets.
- Animal shelter: Call the shelter near you while you are well. Some help in emergencies or know foster homes. Each shelter decides what it offers.
- Boarding kennel or pet hotel: Get to know one before you need it. Ask what they require for your pet, for example proof of vaccination, and whether they can take short notice bookings.
Even a single helper makes a difference. They get the alert when you do not check in, and they have your note and the key.
If it takes longer
If you stay in hospital for several days or weeks, one visit is not enough. Your pet then needs a plan for every day.
- Split the days among your helpers. A short chat or a note on the door is enough so nobody comes twice or skips a day.
- Tell your vet and name who may arrange treatment. A short written authorization for your helper saves queries.
- Plan supplies. Food and medication must last the whole time or be restocked.
- Think about whether your pet moves in with a helper. For many pets a familiar person in a familiar home is the calmest solution. Others do fine at a helper’s place with a garden.
Afterwards
You are back home. End the emergency in PawSafe so everyone knows. Thank your helpers, including those who were not needed in the end.
Look at your pet calmly. Does it eat and drink as usual? Does it move as it normally does? If anything seems off, see your vet.
Then look at your plan. What was missing? Maybe a key, a number or a line on the note. Add it right away while you remember. Then start the timer again whenever your pet stays home alone.

Common questions
Who looks after my pet if I suddenly go to hospital?
Only people who know about it. Paramedics and hospital staff look after you. They learn about your pet only if someone tells them or they find a note on you. So you need helpers with a key and a way to alert them.
How do my helpers find out something happened to me?
Without preparation, they don’t. With PawSafe you start a timer when your pet stays home alone. If you don’t check in, PawSafe alerts your helpers one after another. The emergency card in your wallet and the Medical ID note add two more ways.
Do my helpers need an account or a subscription?
No. Helpers need no account and no subscription. They accept your invitation by link or QR code. Notifications in the app are free. SMS and WhatsApp for helpers without the app come with an optional subscription.
Does every helper see my address right away?
No. A helper sees your address and access note only in an emergency, after tapping to reveal it.
What if my hospital stay is planned?
Then you tell your helpers yourself and hand over keys and the note. Steps 1 to 4 help just the same.
